Lawmakers will not return until after Labor Day.
The Senate officially adjourned through Labor Day although they had not found agreement on the next coronavirus stimulus package.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that if some kind of a deal is reached while the Senate is on recess, members will return to Washington to vote.
For the last several weeks, talks have been at an impasse. “It’s a stalemate,” White House economic adviser and a part of the negotiating team Larry Kudlow said on Thursday.
The White House and congressional leaders are far apart on the size, scope and approach of aid for shoring up households, reopening schools, and launching a national strategy to contain the coronavirus. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the negotiators were “miles apart.” Indications are that talks will not resume in full until Congress resumes in September.
